Nobody Runs Out of Wheel Credits

Watch how an organisation treats AI and you'll see the tell: they wait to be handed a solution, ration it like a metered credit, exhaust it, and quietly go back to the old way of working. Imagine doing that with the wheel.

I keep watching the same thing happen, and I still can't quite believe it's real.

A team spends a year lagging on AI. Some of them quietly hoped it would just go away. Then it doesn't go away - it arrives, properly - and the response isn't to learn it. It's to wait. Wait for the company to hand down a solution. Pick a model for me. Give me some tokens. And then, when the tokens run out, go back to the old way of working as if nothing had happened. Horse and carriage, resumed.

Sit with that for a second, because once you see it you can't unsee it. Picture the same behaviour with any other tool that actually changed how humans live.

Imagine running out of wheel credits and going back to dragging the load.

Imagine the wheel gets invented, people use it for a few weeks, and then - sorry, out of wheel credits this month - they shrug and go back to dragging the load across the ground. Imagine someone discovers fire, and a memo comes down that the fire budget is exhausted, so it's back to raw meat until the new quarter. Stated plainly, it's obviously insane. But that is exactly how a paradigm shift gets treated the moment you file it under "consumable."

That's the category error, and it's the whole thing. AI isn't a metered supply you draw down and run out of and revert from. It's a new way of working. You don't ration the wheel. You reorganise your whole life around it and never look back. The people who get this aren't spending tokens - they've changed how they work, and there's no amount of "running out" that sends them back, because there's no back to go to.

I can't always say this as bluntly as I'd like, so I'll say it here. This is a paradigm shift. Not a feature, not a line item, not a credit you top up. And we are, right now, watching a lot of smart organisations treat the wheel like a rental and wonder why they're falling behind the ones who simply learned to roll.
